Colon Cleaning Benefits – Fact Or Fiction?
Although no scientific medical evidence exists that supports the theory of a toxic colon, many people still practice colon cleaning and supply ample antidotal evidence of its health benefits. They think that colon cleaning detoxifies the body and ensures the elimination of the parasites and other harmful toxins from the body. The colon is in charge of helping the body absorb the needed essential nutrients and removing the waste. Many people believe that a malfunctioning colon results in the collection of the waste matter and the harmful toxins in the body that after a period of time gets re-circulated back into the body. They claim that this is the cause for severe conditions like irritable bowel movement, bloating of the body, fatigue, skin and hair problems and constipation. So, they think that an occasional colon cleansing to remove the toxins and regain the body functions back to normal is a small price to pay for good health.
The two types of colon cleansing are the colon hydrotherapy and the oral cleansing procedure. Using enema to inject water directly into the colon is the technique adopted in colonic irrigation or colon hydrotherapy. An oral cleanser, on the other hand, makes use of dietary fibers or laxatives to clean the colon off the toxins.
Natural cleansing techniques are adopted by many that consist of a colon cleansing diet that has digestive enzymes, probiotics or the useful bacteria, and has the alleged power to kill the parasites and worms. Some claim to fuel the functioning of the liver and intestines, making them healthier. The normal transit time of food through the colon is twenty four hours and many people believe that when the time taken between the food intake to exit through the rectum, increases, it allows the food to decompose, ferment and reabsorb into the body. The theory is that when the putrefaction, fecal substances and other toxins build up in the colon, the pressure exerted on the internal organs rises, leading to constipation. And they believe if left untreated, it can cause colitis, bloating, hemorrhoids, diarrhea, vision difficulty, irritable bowel movements, memory loss and even sinusitis. This is the whole basis of the “toxic” colon theory. Again, no medical evidence supports this theory, but still many people continue to practice colon cleaning.
Many people consider colon cleansing to be highly advantageous for maintaining a healthy body; they think that the reduction of constipation ensures that the body is assured of a continuous supply of essential nutrients that can improve the vitality. The false belief is that the removal of the toxins from the intestinal walls reduces waste elements like stored fecal matter, mucus, gas, and other contaminants in the body which may cause the accumulation of toxins that may lead to diarrhea.
A large part of the colon cleaning voodoo today is based around weight loss. The bogus claims are that a healthier colon weighs as much as four pounds, but there have been claims made where a dysfunctional colon has weighed as high as forty pounds. Of course, you won’t find any actual scientific studies supporting this antidotal “evidence”. But still people continue to believe that the detoxification of the body with colon cleansing can go a long way in maintaining a health body weight. Other claims include the increased absorption of the essential vitamins and nutrients, which allegedly creates healthy and glowing skins and beautiful hair, increased energy levels, and improved concentration.
So, why colon cleaning remains a popular health “cure” remains a mystery. It’s been practiced for hundreds of years and shows no signs of waning in popularity. But, doctors and the medical community don’t recommend colon cleaning or support it, so proceed with caution and don’t believe all the hype.
