Papaya – What the Drug Companies Don’t Want You to Know
Have you ever suffered from dairy food intolerance, acne, low energy, arthritis, allergies, bloating, constipation, hay fever, or stomach ulcers? Chances are you have experienced one or more of these at some time. Of course, the drug companies have a range of “solutions” to these afflictions – for a price. What they won’t tell you is that there is a healthy, natural remedy for many of the ills.
Papaya is also known as papaw or paw paw and is one of the most nutritious fruits. It contains folate, more vitamin A than carrots, more vitamin C than oranges, and large amounts of vitamin E. As well as the minerals calcium, iron and potassium, it contains the powerful enzyme papain. Papain helps break down or digest protein, carbohydrate and fat and has been used very successfully to ease digestive problems. In fact, it is included in some prescription medicines. However the uses and benefits of papain extend far beyond digestive upsets.
It has been used as a meat tenderiser, as a body cleanser, a dandruff inhibitor, to clot milk, to reduce cloudiness in beer, to help heal skin injuries, to remove warts, to treat ringworm, to fight cancer, to assist in recovery following chemotherapy. There are many more uses but to list them all would take many pages. It truly is a “wonder drug” – and you can get it at your local greengrocer! For a fraction of the price of many prescription medicines you can improve your health and avoid the side effects that are associated with many commercial treatments.
All parts of the papaya are useful. Papaya tree bark can be used for toothache. The roots have been used to treat intestinal parasites, yellow fever, and jaundice. The flowers can be used to make a tea to treat jaundice, bronchitis, and laryngitis. The leaves have been used both fresh and dried. The fresh leaves promote healing of open wounds. When made into a tea the leaves can be used to relieve digestive disorders, to remove intestinal worms, to ease heartburn, and to cure diarrhea. Dried, the leaves have been smoked to relieve symptoms of asthma or as a tobacco substitute. Even the seeds are used. Dried and ground they have a spicy, peppery taste and can be used in salads. They are considered to help fight infection, stimulate menstruation, and expel or destroy parasitic intestinal worms. The latex from the tree has been used for psoriasis, ringworm and the removal of cancerous growths.
While many of the uses and benefits have been known for centuries, it is in recent years that scientific studies have verified many of the traditional claims. Eating fresh papaya each day will have a very positive impact on your health – meaning you can probably eliminate many prescription medicines. Of course, before commencing or stopping any treatment, consult your health professional. In particular, pregnant women should avoid eating the green fruit, skin or seeds as these may have an abortifacient effect.
Papaya is being used increasingly in many products on the market and one of the most popular is papaw salve. There are many formulations but the common characteristic of them is that the main ingredient is fermented papaya. These salves have been extremely effective in treating nappy (or diaper) rash, dry skin, cracked nipples, cuts, scratches and abrasions, and gravel rash.
Not without good reason is the papaya known as the medicine tree.
