Questions About Human Worms Feces

Mary asks…

Worms in human feces – HELP!!?

My friend’s 10 year old has diarreah and an itchy anus for about 2 days. She just discovered tiny little white worms in her feces. Of course its a Saturday night so no drs. offices are open tomorrow (Sunday). Is this something they should be too worried about (like should they head to the ER)? Can it be treated my over the counter meds? Any info would be appreciated. She’s freaking out.

Ellen answers:

Have a Walmart in your area, an all night one? Go there and get some Mebendazole, now she must take two doses, because the Mebendazole will not kill the eggs, and she needs to give her daughter another dose in about five days, when the eggs hatch, it will say how long on the package to wait before second dose.
Wash all her pj’s, bed linens, underpants in hot soapy water.
And if any other children have been sleeping in her bed they should be checked out too. Also any friends she had been playing with, you know taking a sip of pop, eating a cookie.
You can check younger children out, with a flashlight when they are sleeping, the worms will crawl around the opening of the rectum.

Robert asks…

My friends have talked about worms I’m kinda freaked out can I tell if I have them by feces or something?

So my friend just outta nowhere starts talking about worms,I’m easily bothered by some stuff and I wanted to know if I can tell if I have worms by looking at my feces(and I don’t wannaa touch it either, but if its the only way I’ll have too). And what are the ages that a human can get worms??I’m in my early teens and I want to know really quickly please and thank you!

Ellen answers:

You get a very itchy bottom and if you look at your poo you can see tiny white thread worms moving which look like little bits of cotton. Just make sure you keep your hands clean especially after going to the bathroom and there is no reason to get them and its a good reason not to bite your nails!

Susan asks…

Can a dog transmit round worms buy licking a human???

I think my puppy has round worms or possibly tape worms, I cant fully tell but I know I saw some kind of worm in her feces, my father talked to someone at the pet store and they said it most likely was round worms and that they can be transmitted to humans so I am just wondering if we can get it by her licking us. and also how can I tell the difference between round worms and tape worms from looking at my puppy’s feces?

Ellen answers:

Take her to the vet and let the vet tell you what it is. You can’t diagnose a pet on the internet.

Mark asks…

parasite in human feces?

i have been on a parasite program for about 2 weeks. I have actually seen dead worms ( about 1/2″ long and maybe 1/16 – 1/8 inch wide) in the stool along with large brown “flakes”. Last night there was something totally different looking in the feces. It looked almost like splinters of wood and they were really hard – just a bunch of them all in masses and several of the masses. Could this be dead tissue of some sort? What could this be? I have been having serious pain in the upper right abdomen and several tests have not shown anything abnormal other than a hiatal hernia.

Ellen answers:

Sounds like tapeworm

Sandra asks…

Small white worms found in dog feces!?

We have a dog and are dog-sitting a 3 month old bobtail. We noticed these small white worms in a fece in our back yard. We will make sure to take them to the vet. Are these worms dangerous to humans? Is it contageous?

Ellen answers:

It is likely tape worm segments, and humans aren’t apt to get them, unless they ingest the fleas….Tape worms are transmitted through eating an infected (egg carrying) flea.

Good normal hygeine (handwashing before eating, etc) will assure you don’t get dog worms of any kind.

Your vet will give meds, and all will be fine.
