Warning: Detailed Question… Worm in human stool?
***Note: This question is not for those of you who are “grossed out” easily – I will just leave it at that. If you happen to know anything about intestinal parasites/worms in humans, your input would be most appreciated.***

Before I went to bed last night, I had taken a couple of laxatives, and when I woke up I went to empty my bowel. All was normal until I noticed a distinctive, purely white figure linked in-between two parts of the stool. I suspected it might be a worm, but I couldn’t be sure because I only saw 1 centimeter in length of it, and it was about 1/2 centimeter wide (probably close to 1 centimeter or less all around).
I have been reading about intestinal worms online, but there are not enough details for me to make a comparison. I have noticed a change in my eating habits since the mysterious white thing passed, before I would get hunger pains and cravings only 10-15 minutes after eating an entire meal, but now I have remained full for the whole day after a couple of small meals. Also, I have experienced some on and off constipation and bloating of my lower abdomen (I will see if this goes away over the week).
My first guess was a tapeworm…. any suggestions or ideas?

Ellen answers:
I know this sounds a little weird, but I have IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) and sometimes there is mucus in the stool that looks kind of “worm like”. But it could also be a tapeworm. Either way, you need to go see your doctor. Good luck!

George asks…
I need some information on human worms??
I dont have worms but im worried about getting them and my children getting them i found out one of my family members had recently had some in her stool. I heard putting garlic in the rectum will help can you give me facts on that??

Ellen answers:
I’m not a medical professional at all, but my family always grew up around animals and on farms, so I’m familiar with tales of worms and such.
We were always told that worms were contagious through towels, sheets, linens, etc. And that basically if one person in the house had it, the whole house should be treated. Also, this is gross, but you can check for worms by shining a flashlight in the rectum while a child is asleep. Again, this is gross, but it’s because worms are active at night and they can often be seen.
That’s what the health department told my mom years ago.
Anyway, I don’t think I’d mess with the garlic remedy. Sounds kind of painful, but I don’t know if its effective. The best idea is to keep fingernails trimmed and out of mouths, and just generally keep an out for symptoms.
And if someone does have worms, you can call a pharmacist and get an anti-worm treatment. They have a product called pin-x for pinworms.

Ruth asks…

Lisa asks…
How can I tell if I have worms???
I think that I have worms because my anal passage itches like mad, it feels like I have squirmy things inside my bum. This is a serious question and I would appreciate someones advice, a parent or nurse perhaps. How can I know for sure? There are little white things in my stools – are they the worms? Also, my girlfriend has never heard of humans having worms – do you agree with her and that animals only get worms? If they are not worms then can you tell me what is wrong with me please.

Ellen answers:
Yes you have worms. They are called pin worms, because they are about size and shape of a pin. Humans can get them just from carrying microscopic eggs in on our shoes. Then we inhale the eggs that are airborne and that causes an infestation of worms. We can also get them if we allow our dog to lick our face or cat to get close to our face.
It doesn’t mean you are not clean. However you need to wash your hands thoroughly after using the bathroom for a number one or two. Change your underpants daily and don’t share your towel. Change your bed sheets don’t share your bed. Wear underpants in bed. Clean the toilet seat with disinfectant after every use.
Go to the pharmacy and get over the counter product to get rid of worms. You will need to repeat in two weeks after the eggs have hatched.
Hope that helps. Don’t stress about it just get the medicine and do all the other stuff this will prevent others from getting them and from a re infestation. Oh, and wash your clothing on a hot wash.
